Hi all, this is my first time posting and i hope i have done it right, i need some advice concerning the coil springs on my AFN 1997 A4, the car was on lowered springs when i bought the car and i was told they were 1.8 turbo springs, i have just enquired about new springs and shocks for the rear and were told that the diesel and turbo 1.8 springs were the same, the car definately rides lower than a standard A4 so it may be taht i have aftermarket springs, tha problem i have is that i only want to replace the rears at the moment and obviously if i put standard springs on then it will look jacked up at the rear, is there any way to tell waht springs i have without taking them off and measuring and even then would i know, because they may have compressed over time, i suppose i could just guesss how much lower than a standard car they are and then get ones to suit. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

There are two basic types of spring, standard or sport. The sports option is an optional extra regardless of what engine you have. So a 1.8T might have standard suspension, and 1.9TDi might have the sports set.

Remove the wheel, if the springs are genuine Audi there will be a number of paint squares somewhere on the coil. Should be either 2, 3, 4 squares. You might need a mirror. Post the colour combination back and I will check the parts list.

Also check the data sticker in you spare wheel bay and look for the running gear code. Sports suspension is 1BE, standard is 1BA.

Failing all that you could remove and measure them, even if they sagged slightly you should be able to tell.

if the rear springs are from a audi 1.8 turbo.. they will have coour marking on the springs. 3 dots.. this will tell you exactley what springs you have on at the moment.

best would be to take them off, measure them..
or infact get a complete set front and rear.. as long as its not sports chassis, should be able to get some eibach springs easily, and not to expensive too.

(1BV is also sports suspension 1999 1.8t quattro sport B5)
