    No need to remove alternator, just follow the bottom hose back from the rad, where it joins the block is a moulded plastic flanged hose fitting, the thermostat is under it.
    the bolts are 7mm thread which is unusual, so don't drop them....

    I have a 2002 Passat Sport PD 130 Estate with AVF engine and asked the same question on 29-3-2011 as I was unable to find my G62 sensor after several attempts.

    The answer was provided by Crasher who included an excellent photograph. Go back three pages and find it.

    The parts you need are;

    059919501A - G62 temperature sender................£28.28 + vat
    N90316802 - O Ring............................................£ 1.03 + vat
    ????????????- Plastic retaining clip.......................£ .55 + vat

    The new one is brass/green plastic. Original is black

    Can be bought off ebay for £7/8 complete but my advice is to buy VW too.

    Get a small mirror and torch to locate it. It is between the bulkhead and back of the engine on the drivers side and plugs into an alloy boss on the engine. The boss points to the rear of the car. The sensor plugs into it at right angles and points to the offside as the picture shows.

    My plastic retaining clip pointed upwards and the two prongs can be seen in the slots from above. There is no need to disturb alternator whish is on the opposite side anyway. It is approached from the drivers side.

    I found it easier to remove the first knuckle from the air cleaner to intercooler pipe that runs between engine and bulkhead after removing the engine cover and the smaller cover screwed to the exhaust manifold heatshield etc. Release pressure in header tank but replace cap.

    Fit o-ring to sensor in readiness. Unplug connector from old sensor tying up out of the way. as it get covered in antifreeze. Remove retaining clip downwards holding old sensor in place. Have a tapered wine cork ready that fits O-ring.......remove old sensor complete with original O-ring and replace with new sensor/ring checking that the old ring is removed .

    Alternatively use the cork to stem the flow of antifreeze to give time to line up the new sensor/ring in readiness. The removed cork will probably pull out the old ring....but again check.

    Hold the new sensor in place while.....re-fitting plastic sensor retaining clip from beneath into the sensor housing holes ensuring that the two 'pins' are visible on the top. Wash off all spilt antifreeze. Replace dry plug. Top up header tank. You will probably have only lost a few mm of antifreeze.

    Refit turbo pipes ensuring all the small bore pipes are plugged-in where they shold be. Replace engine covers.

    Don't damage the black foam around the cam-cover as they cost over ....£50

    If you don't ask the right question.....bud?..... you won't always get the right answer.

    After market guys usually have two different parts...one that fits...........!
