Have you had someone look at this noise? Or are you assuming it is the part you were advised was worn?

Whilst I agree with the very knowledgable PeterD, that you part worn on the alternator needs sorting sooner rather than later, I don't believe it is the noise you are hearing if it stops when the clutch is depressed. I think the noise you have is a noisey clutch release bearing.

Its def the belt as bi gave it a squirt of wd40 which stopped it for a day, dipping the clutch reduces the engine speed and is stopping the belt slipping. anyway its booked in for next friday so will be sorted then.,

    thanks guys

Sounds like the alternator pulley, had it go on my A6 a few years back (God, makes it sound like I've had this car for donkey's years!) all that was required was an alternator pulley (I think it's around £60+ VAT from the dealer) and a spline bit tool set (£10) to do the job myself.

Ok so it was more than originally thought. The alternator pulley was seized and the tensioner and pulley was also knackered so they have replaced thm along with a new belt at a total cost of £325 but its made a hell of a difference, even the steering which was a bit juddery when car was stationary is now smooth as silk. I suppose this is the price to pay for having an 11 year old car with 136k, but i hope it will do another 136k b4 it dies.
