I thought I'd have to mention my experiences on this forum.....

Having just changed one of the metal coolant pipes on my AKE engine (Coolant Loss topic). 'Peter D' advised me to change my Oil Retention valves, since I'd dismantled everything to do this.

I had never heard of these but they seem to retain the oil in the heads. I noticed the old valves were very worn and I could open them with my fingers.

Maybe this is one of the causes of the premature CAM wear........

Anyway, my engine is now quiet from cold, having been previously very noisy.

Do you happen to have a part number for the valve? Just wondering if a bit of preventative maintenance might be in order...

    Thanks!

    I have a part number from VagCat;
    059103175A

The AKE needs two of them, one for each head (about 25 quid each), not sure about other V6's.

Its not an easy job, it involves removing the turbo and oil filter housing. Does seem a lot of work for two valves, but if you have a rattle that dissapears when you rev the engine and comes back on the overun then this is your problem, especially when cold and on short journeys.

I would've done mine ages ago if I had known (probably been rattling for 9 months or so), although it doesn't appear to have done too much damage since the engine is quiet now. I have noticed some significant wear on the CAM lobes though and I have always used the correct oil.

Thanks for that! Was looking for it online and wasn't finding it, probably because I was looking in the wrong place.

Just in case anyone else is looking for these, the part number has changed to 059 103 175 F which I think means it has been redesigned at some stage...

    Just dragging this up again.

I need to replace the 059 103 175 F oil retention valves too.

Quite a bad rattle on cols start up lately.

The manual says remove the cat then the turbo then the oil filter housing.

Did you get away with not removing the cat?

Did you replace the o rings on the valves too?

Yeah, you definately have to do as the manual says, there's no other way. I ended up removing the injector pipes too, not sure if thats in the manual.

While I was there I removed the inlet manifolds and cleaned them out, nice messy job.

But engine all nice and quiet now.

Are there definitely two of these?
The service manual section does show two of these but the parts catalog only shows one. It shows the AKN, AKE, and AFB as having the same block but the blow up diagram only shows one valve down in there, marked as 059 103 175 F Non Return Valve. The only other thing I can see is a part marked 059 115 540 B Oil Spray Jet.
