After 11 years of TLC I need to replace my B5 Passat 1.8t (150ps) and would like to get a 2008 A4. I rarely put my foot down in the Passat so I am thinking that a 120ps A4 will not be noticeable slower, to me anyway.

I have not read any criticism of the 120ps A4's acceleration. Do any of you over-50 folks find it sluggish ?

I've not driven one but perhaps the lack of criticism is that people don't expect much grunt from it.

Is it actualy a decent seller? If not you may find you lose more on it over the period of ownership than a more mainstream model.

I had the 1.8T as a loaner the other week- I was quietly impressed, the engine is very refined and more than capable on dual carriageways for overtaking. I am not sure what power output I had although I feel it may be the 160ps as it didn't feel that slow.

My two penneth if I may:

I used to have a passant (estate) 02 2.0 with around 115bhp. Found it a relaxing cruiser, acceleration wasn't great but good enough when needed although did need to change down a lot.

Also have read elsewhere that the current 2.0 Tdi 120 is a bit sluggish.

But again, if you aren't a swift driver what will you miss?

I suppose the only obvious advice is to try it on a test drive ,depending on budget, miles and how long you'll keep it don't rule out the diesel - the tdi(e) has incredible MPG.

After a year I find the acceleration is fine. With points on my licence and mainly city driving, it is fine. Of course 160ps would be better.

Last week, when driving the car to France, it was so smooth it was like driving the starship Enterprise.
