Can anyone help re the spec of a commonly available brake fluid to match the VW specific fluid VW501 14-B 000 750.

The VW online manual is insistant that this is the only fluid to be used in my 2007 Passat stating that the earlier fluid B 000 700 A must not be used.

All very confusing as there is no mention of a DOT spec. so I can reference it to the outside world.

    It's Dot 4 but with a difference - don't ask me what!

    Have a look here http://www.pentosin.net/f_breakfluid.asp

The spelling of 'break' isn't mine, btw.

Doubt if it would be any better buy than VW's 'own', but it might give you more of an idea of what it is?

The Comma DOT 4 ESP stuff will be fine. I just changed the brake pads and fluid on my Passat and used this:
