    Hi
Turned the car over today .would not start.Mk 3 8v Gti.Thought it was fuel prob.took plug out. wet with petrol so assume its getting juice in the chamber. No spark from plug.rotor arm is turning.checked all leads connections etc.fine..How can I safely check voltage from coil? Also heard something about ignition relay/ECU?where are they?
If anyone could help I would be most appreciative.
    Thanks

Pull the connector and H.T. cable off the ignition transformer
Check the primary resistance with a multimeter between terminals 1 and 15.
    Specification: 0.5...1.2 ω
Check secondary resistance with a multimeter between terminals 4 and 15.
    Specification: 3...4 kω
If the specifications are not attained:
    Replace the ignition transformer

Thanks mate but that sounds like japanese to me.Ive never used a multimeter before.Heard someone say you can connect the HT straight to a plug and turn it over.Is that dangerous? also where is the coil then if the HT connects to ignition transformer.Sorry if I sound dumb.Ive done loads of work on different cars before but this is a new one on me.Shall I replace the RELAY 30(where are the relays)- or CPS.
Apologies for all the questions but it seems like theres an endless list of things to check.

Pull the HT lead out of the distibutor and hold the end about 1cm from the cyl head, and get someone to turn the engine. The ignition transformer is the coil.and it is on the bulk head, follow the HT lead from the distributor and you will find it.The first place to start, when there is no spark is the coil, and since you can not measure it, the easiest thing to do is attach another coil and take it from there.

Just in case anyone reads on.I got a coil and earth strap from scrappers and everythings fine now.I think the old coil earth strap had frayed and broke away causing short out so check yours. No more sleepless nights about Relay 30 and Crank position sensors for the moment.
    Happy motoring.
