hi there, my brother in law has a 2006 Passat 2.0 tdi estate , manual gearbox with approx 85000 on the clock.recently bought this car as a one owner car ex fleet with full VW service history, but recently when you place the car into 1st gear , you set off and come to a stop for instance at a set off traffic lights, and out it into 1st gear, you cannot get it out of gear. this also happens when you place it into reverse gear, once in there you struggle to het it out, however, on the road, the gears dont stick when in 2 3 4 or 5th? when placing it into 1st, sometimes it feels like there is a grinding noise as it goes into 1st? help, does anyone have any suggestions?. i can't believe it could be a major gearbox problem on this 1 owner full service car, surely???

Perhaps it's just the linkage that requires adjustment/tightening. I'd look at that first, then maybe have to look deeper if that seems ok.

Sounds like the same problem I've been having recently, and selecting reverse in particular can be a real pain. I'm hoping it might improve as the weather gets a bit warmer, but resident expert Martin reckons it's the dual mass flywheel on the way out, which isn't a surprise at higher mileages, but it's the thick end of a grand to replace

Have you got any of the other symptoms I describe, such as the clutch biting suddenly, particularly when the car is cold?

Sounds like the clutch is worn out. This is most probably a worn friction plate. The car will probably need a new clutch/dmf set. You could check the gear change linkage on the gearbox, under the battery/air cleaner area. I doubt that is the problem though.

I had exactly same problem at set of lights a year ago. Gear lever stuck in first and reverse fairly frequently. Got towed into Hull VW after breaking down. They fitted new clutch and new gear linkage cables ( the old ones had frayed quite badly causing severe restriction of cable movement ) Cost £770. Got car back and gears were still difficult to select. Had car diagnosed at Aberdeen VW - new clutch release bearing required. To their credit, Hull VW fitted new bearing free of charge - all I had to do was provide it. Since then, gear changing has been sweet although I did replace DMF about 6 months ago as it was rattling a bit. I would check gear link cables first to check for fraying. If they look ok then you're as well fitting new clutch, release bearing and DMF in a one-r since the gearbox is gonna have to come out. Hope this helps. Good luck!!

Thanks for that Alan, interesting information.

Mine has been a bit better with the milder weather, but it still wasn't too keen to go into reverse the other night at 10C,
and was very stiff coming out of first at one point last night with the temp at a reasonable 6C, but I'm just waiting to see what happens in the meantime.

Most of the time it feels normal enough, it just seems to happen randomly.
