It looks like you get a big improvement with the manual gearbox, that or Geordie Amanda shows more restraint then I do! With all that torque it is too tempting to plant the right foot....

    I get around 36mpg on A-roads/motorway.

As an aside, and not feeling paranoid, does anyone get a DIS that under estimates economy?

Even with all the snow , ice and cold still getting just over 31mpg.Took car over New Year from near Malton to Thetford and she averaged 43 their (slow going due to foggy conditions) and 40 on way back on New Years day with little or no traffic on roads. A1 was really quiet and average speed was ......mph !

Been wondering, does the cold dramatically affect mpg? Mine's been lower and with diesel prices (2.0Tdi), I'm getting fed up of the expense!! Managed to coax my car over the 11 day mark between fill-ups.

I get about 4 days from a tank - round about 420 miles per tank - thants from brim full to about 10 miles (on the screen) from empty. Usual around 56 litres. Most I have ever squeezed in is 61 litres.... must have been on fumes that day.

Hmm.... I don't think I'm getting >50+ miles more from my full tank than you are getting. And mine's a 2.0TDi!!

I find it really makes a difference on short trips because of the length of time it takes that big chunk of cast iron to heat through. The difference in friction between a cold and warm engine is quite amazing. Taking your foot off the gas with any sort of revs on feels like braking when the engine's cold.

In answer to the original question: 30-35mpg on short trips, 40-45 on longer ones depending on driving style. No significant difference in mpg between 70 and 85 on the motorway - it's much more about how I speed up / slow down. DIS is optimistic by 5-10% depending on its mood. Manual, btw.

Thanks for all the feedback folks - especially the hot/cold observation Satsu.

FWIW based on this morning's fill up I've averaged 33.9MPG which sounds to be in line with many people's findings. Looking at the trip computer on motorway journies I look to be at the low end of the 40-45 range but that's ok.

I shall now see how adjusting my driving style affects the results. Rather than turn this thread into my mileage log though, I'll stick something in my signature and try to remember to update it.

But no advanced key so I can still lock myself out

    32.7 MPG as of 27-01-11

That's actually really good MPG. I get about 550miles to a 65 litre tank in a 1.9TDi. 420Miles is very impressive for such a big engine. Looking to get mine in April woo

The biggest difference I noticed is city driving v motorway and country. The normal journey I do is to Normandy for weekends which is a mixture of motorway and B roads. Due to pretty draconian speed checks in France I rarely go over the 110/130 km/h speed limit so I would say that I drive fairly economically.

A few months ago we moved in Paris which involved a lot of short trips. The MPG then went down to 27.
