water has got into the boot catch
probably need new catch and the 3 little wires replacing to the switch
this is caused by the rear washer hose coming off of the rear wiper motor

Yep ! Totally agree with the above.
You have a leak in the rear washer mechanisim.
Very common fault with the MK4.
You have been using the rear water jet to clear your rear screen and it has leaked into the sensor in the lock.
I had exactly the same problem on my car. I guess if you leave it for a couple of days, it will dry out.
You say that when you lock the car the indicators dont flash which would suggest you have an alarm in the car. The reason this may happen is cause with the boot playing up, you have an incomplete circuit.
The best way to address this is to take the panel on the inside of the boot lid and check the water pipe is firmly and securly on, Once this has been done, maybe put a cable tie around the join and see how you go. If it dries out over a couple of days and you address the issue of the water pipe, you may not need to replace the lock.
The above post is based on my own experience with the same problem.
    Good luck.

    Hi
From what you say in your post, it sounds like you have a problem with your door lock mechanisim. I, very recently had a similar problem were my kerb light was on all the time and the same with my courtesy light, even when the door was closed, though I also had a central locking issue aswell.
I would suggest that you get a fault code read done first to see if there are any other problems with the door.
The door locks are about £117, and for someone who knows what they are doing, very easy to fit, about an hour.
Personally, it may be the start of further problems to come.
This post is based on my own experience.
    Good luck/

    Hi
Hope you dont mind a newbie replying but I have the same problem with the luggage compartment warning showing, as with everybody else my problem started with a leaking wiper and now the dash is showing the tailgate isnt shut and as a result when the alarm is activated the lights dont flash as the brain thinks the tailgate is open. My problem is that the leak has been cured for about 4 weeks and the problem still exists, anyone got any ideas? Cheers
    Dave

If you're sure there is no moisture in the door lock mechanism, then it could be the micro switch within the mechanism that is faulty. Possibly a failed soldered joint, which is known to happen on front DLM's. See here.
