is this normal behaviour or what ?
they come on when reverse is selected but are constantly sounding as if you are real close to an obstruction, even of nothing is there, more irritating still is when it sound front and back alternately.
they seem to be a total waste of time and unusable.

Check for moisture in immediate vicinity of each sensor - do a precautionary wipe.

Rainwater, snow, frost, grime, etc. can influence them going off.

[I could be banned for saying this, but the VW parking sensors are pretty crap, especially when I compared them to my previous motor - BMW 3 series (2002)]

Yes, they are pretty crap. On my third set in four years, would love to change them for aftermarket.

It is a well known problem, particularly after a car has been standing in heavy rain overnight.

I find blowing out water and then waxing each sensor works for a while.

There have been various suggestions for 'curing' the problem posted on here over the years, so it might be worth doing a search.

Bear in mind that WD40 eventually goes sticky when it dries out, which might or might not be a good idea.

Just a thought - beware of weather conditions. In the recent cold and frost, mine sometimes give a false positive indication if temperatures are below freezing or there is still frost on the car. It is always the coldest end of the car (i.e. into wind) that faults. They are perfect when warm.

Methinks a bit of over enthusiastic jet washing has got a bit of moisture in the gubbins, even thought the sensors should be hermetically sealed.

they do seem better now its milder...shame some loon has banged the rear o/s bumper on ours in a car park and peed off without leaving details...crazed all the plastic and scraped the corner including the outer park sensor.....typical
