There's no need for that kind of language.I'm not a big fan of main dealers myself but still........although I'm sure some folks might be interested in that offer......if it's genuine that is.

    KJ Auto

You may be a beezer mechanic, but not much good at winning customers there by generally abusing them.

    I think you miss-diagnosed the <removed>

KJauto cannot convert it to spur gears for 1k, he has offered the solution before on this forum, and as i understand, it is to dump the whole balancer shaft in the bin and replace it with an oil pump alone, chain driven, as per the earlier 1.9 engine. He claims the engine will be smoother than it was with the balance shafts-?- i think most people would find that hard to accept (me included!) Why would Audi fit them in the first place?- they must be expensive to produce and thus add to the cost of the car in a competitive market place, surely they are needed for good reason? And no KJ, I don`t care for being called stupid either thank you, I`m sure you didn`t mean any offence, but a poor choice of phrase, no need . Regards, Bob.

    Hi,

just been reading through this thread with the usual mixture of dread after discovering I have a BLB engine.

On digging further I found a thread on the Passat forum from which I have copied the following post....

Re: BKP - should I be worried?
There are two well documented problems with 2.0 tdi engines.

    1. Oil pump drive shaft failure. This is a possibility on any 2.0 tdi engine and has no obvious cause. Possible future failure cannot be predicted. Lots of 2.0 tdi engines have done 100k plus miles with no problem at all.

    2. Balancer shaft assembly failure. (If this fails it takes out the oil pump, hence confusion with 1. above).
Up to chassis No: E082000 or P070000, Engine codes BMA, BKP and BMP were likely to have been fitted with a chain drive balancer shaft assembly. The chain drive had a habit of failing, locking the balancer shaft and wrecking the engine.
VW made efforts to recall all these cars and check which balancer shaft was fitted.
Chain drive assemblies were replaced free of charge.

After chassis No: E082001 or P070001 all 2.0 tdi engines had a cog driven balancer shaft assembly which has no chain to fail.

The chassis number is a number. So E082001 is Eighty two thousand and one. If your car has a chassis number bigger than eighty two thousand and one, it should not have the early chain drive balancer shaft assembly.

You can check with any VW dealer to see if a vehicle was inspected and had balancer shaft work done. It should be on their computer system.

!.9 tdi engines do not have balancer shaft assemblies so can’t be affected.

Given that it appears the VW have had the issue subjected to a recall, what the hell are Audi playing at!

Sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere - I've not found any mention.

    Cheers
    Ray

What's wrong with you? They ripping you off and you still comin back and back to them. vw/ audi is like LEGO so actually you can build unbreakable engine! Just need some time and knolege.

C'mone, anyone with oil pump problem I'll give you free advice how to fix it and which parts to use. It make me sick when people goin back to dealers!
Talking of stupid - you just crossed the line mr kjauto.

Touting for business, slating main dealers and using foul language. I don't know what to ban you for first!

For the benefit of other members who consider following in this chaps footsteps, don't.

We're zero tolerance on (unfair) abuse of anyone and we certainly don't tolerate foul language.

And just to be clear, if I were looking for someone to take my car to - it wouldn't be someone who clearly doesn't have the first clue about what he's talking about.

Hi All, I have taken the plunge and pulled my car apart, my new balance shaft module has arrived and is awaiting fitment. My observations on this job (so far) are as follows:
1)New balance module is different to the old one in that it only has 6 mounting bolts instead of 8.
    2) The centre pair of shell bearings have been deleted from the unit, i.e. the bal. shafts now run in 4 bearings rather than 6.
    3) Oil pump is slightly different and some of the mount bolts are different lengths to the old ones.Needless to say i have been supplied with the wrong ones.....
    4) A pair of bolts that hold the unit itself together have been left out completely around the centre of the frame-looks alarming but I assume its because centre bearings now deleted as mentioned above. I have no idea if the above mods are an improvement or just cost cutting by AUDI-(If so not passed onto me as unit alone is over £800 with vat!). If anyone else is fitting a new balancer -let me know if you find the same!

I was dreading the removal of the old crank sprocket:shattering/shrapnel etc etc- it was easy! ,but i set it up properly first by removing the lock carrier away far enough to get a decent three legged (Facom) puller in, tightened it up moderately, and then played an oxy acet flame on the sprocket for about 10 seconds only- jacked up the puller a bit and the sprocket cracked, but did not break, so i wound up the puller a bit more and off she came nice as you like, no big drama- secret is a good puller and just a little high heat quickly i.e oxy acet.- make sure the crank itself does not get hot.

Its worth mentioning that my car was noisy, but on removal of the sump the tensioner was NOT broken, however close inspection of the chain revealed it to be shockingly worn and stretched-I removed the tensioner unit and the chain was so loose i could simply lift it off the sprockets-the chains are hoplessly weak for this application and despite full service/proper oil from new 92000 mls, it was shot to pieces. The sprockets at first looked ok, but closer inspection showed that the were goosed too- they had to be with a chain like that, with every second tooth on the big sprocket visibly hooked and the teeth on the small one generally worn.I can wrap the chain tightly around the big sprocket and pull each link away from the teeth by a mile. I would say this- if you elect to cut the repair bill by replacing the chain only-complete false economy. If you replace the whole chain set up with BOTH sprockets then you have some chance , but remember the design is hopless-downhill from day one .The gear conversion is eye wateringly dear..... You pay`s your money and you take`s your choice........ Best of luck, Bob.

Hi Mark, I have to say this job is not for the faint hearted-my car has been propped up in my garage now for two weeks and I`ve still a long way to go.I`ve spent £15-20 overnight on Erwin looking up the procedure, absolutely everything costs costs costs.....With tools /spares it will run me well over £1500. I have also discovered a glaring error in the internet published procedures (TDI Club/My Turbodiesel)for this job where a critical bolt, the idler gear bolt, crucial to the whole engine has been given a tightening torque figure of 20nm.... The true figure according to VW/Audi workshop manual is 90nm!!! If people have done the job and used that low figure, the bolt could conceivably loosen and wreck the engine....... In answer to your question- yes the oil pump can be done with the engine in the car but the job is so complex that it may be as easy to remove the motor completely.Unless you are an accomplised mechanic with access to good facilities, I would cut your losses and sell the car as is, or pay (gulp) for a garage to do it-may still be cheaper than buying another car (and inheriting any problems that that car might have.....) Good Luck, Bob

We are just fitting the spur gear drive balancer shaft conversion on a BLB A4 today, we have to wait nearly 2 months for the part to come off back order, the customer has been going spare! I find the most worrying part the accurate heating up and seating of the crank drive gear.

hi and sorry to hijack but I need some info on this subject and I have put my own tread up regarding this issue.
Long story short my mates A4 2.0 tdi has got the oil pump problem and Iv been researching for a couple of days and had the same idea i think as the guy who has been banned and that is to do away with the balance shafts all together and use the 2.0 tdi oil pump off the transverse variant of the engine found in golfs etc. What I need to know is will the parts fit and what parts I need.
I am a mechanic but it is a love job IE free and I have never done this before.
I think the transverse oil pump will bolt straight on to the A4 engine but unsure on the chain, will a original spec fit that pump.
You can get a new pump off ebay for around £100 and the chain and tensioner kit (for the original pump) for £220.
    Any help is appreciated.
