Hi all, I have posted this before but still have the problem. Firstly my car is a 1.9tdi 1999 afn engine.
I had is serviced a month or two back in from the moment it came out the garage it struggled to fire up as it did before it went in.
at one point it was taking that long to start up i thought it would drain the battery.
I took it to another garage to check it out. at a cost of £180 he changed the glow plugs as he said they where shot, which is telling me my car was firing up fine on one glow plug beforehand. changed the fuel filter again and blew the lines out to get any crap that might of got in there. He also checked the fuel pump in the tank but guess what, it wasn't there! and he was stumped as to his diagram it should be there.

it still struggles to start but will start, and runs fine once running.

Has anyone got any ideas on where to go with this, or fuel line diagram to where my fuel pump is.
my coolant also froze other the other week and think it has killed my CST, no temp at all now on my dash.

any help on this would be appreciated or anyone in Merseyside who knows what they are doing and may be able to fix it.

    thanks again.

im not sure about the diesel but i have the exact same problem with my petrol 1.8.

your diagnosis seems to be relating to the same issue as mine, according to vagcom, the error on my car is the coolant sensor, which causes problems starting in cold, problems with the temp gauge and irratible idleing.

I reacon if you replace the coolant sensor it will solve your problem, and its only a £5 part and 5 min job to replace.

This has all been happening way before the sensor failed last week, I had actually changed the sensor as it was not displaying right temp. CST was fine I need to change the thermostat.

mine I believe is purely to do with the fuel system

I would suggest you go to vw/audi independent and get a proper
VCDS full scan done, including measuring blocks.

I could be wrong, but i think the AFN fuel-pump does all the lifting itself.
(the scan will check the pump timing, it could be out)

    Regards
    Jim

They do not have an in tank lift pump. The first thing I would check (after a code read and some measuring block viewing) is the “O” rings in the plastic fitting on top of the fuel filter.

If all fine until service a leak allowing air to be sucked in or a squashed / trapped / kinked pipe most likely.

it has had another filter put on, doesn't it come with a new "O" ring I have had a quick look around and couldnt see anything.
i have got VCDS on my laptop. What should i be looking for if I hook it up.

it says nothing about any pumping fuel issues
I can read measuring blocks but not sure what i am looking at.

    thanks again

I would be looking through the measuring blocks to see if anything stood out such as the injection timing, fuel temperature or anything else but that is all based on experience and it would take me hours to list out all the things to look for in the numerous measuring blocks. Yes it may have had a new filter but that does not mean the O rings have been changed or are not damaged. I once had one that I serviced do the same thing as yours. I found that when I had pushed down the plastic T piece onto the fuel filter that the O rings had been damaged and this allowed air into the system.

well might as well try an "O" ring first then, anyone got one? to know where to get one

N 904 264 02 from an Audi dealer. I would also change the valve 191 127 247 A. They should not have disturbed this doing the filter but I have known them get damaged and cause your problem.
