Im in the process of saving to get the tbelt clutch and flywheel replaced at the moment and i also wanted to check to see if camshaft is ok can anyone tell me if this is something i could do myself or if not how much should i expect it to cost if i took it to a garage. Id like to know this before i bring to get the work done so if there is something wrong there i can try to get it sorted at the same time. My tech level with cars is not great by the way so i would not tackle if it involves anything too technical

Replacement of a camshaft kit requires a high level of engineering
    skill, knowledge and special tools.

If you suspect the cam or rockers are failing, because of a knocking
sound or a drop-off in performance or an oil starvation issue, then
you can remove the rocker-cover and look for scraping marks where
the lobes meet the rockers. Post pics here.

    Regards
    Jim

Cheers for the advice mate i wont go near it then. Reason i think there might be somethin wrong with the cam is because my brother went to look at an a4 avant 2.5tdi v6 a few weeks ago and it had rough idle and the guy went and got it checked and it turned out to be worn cam and the price tag to fix was scary. Im gettin the clutch timing belt and flywheel replaced and id be fairly disgusted to find out afterwards that the cam was worn too. If the cam was worn i would not even bother gettin the other work done. Is the rocker cover easy to take off. I have a socket set and two hands so if theres nothin too complicated about it i would take off and take some pics and post them

They are two completely different animals, and if that's the only
reason you have, then you can relax, use the proper oil and
    sleep easy.

But we do like to see photos of engine parts here.........

No prob mate Thing is i bought this car with 120000 on it so im not sure if the correct oil has been put in it. It does burn oil not much i think and black smoke on heavy acceleration which i know is unburnt fuel or maby partly due to a remap done before i got the car. How awkward is it to remove rocker cover... do the bolt have to be tightened to a certain tightness and also removed in a certain order or something like that?

Think your chasing a ghost here..... but if it keeps ya happy.

    120k is nothing

Black smoke; could be remap, run injector cleaner through it and
    check air filter.

Rocker cover; nice easy job. Remove and tighten from the centre out,
left then right on opposing sides, and repeat with all 12 bolts, no need to
over-tighten, because its a rubber gasket, and you could ring the threads
on the alloy head!!! Remove breather-pipes. It will all make sense when
    you take the engine-cover off.

    Regards
