I wish to reply due to a worry I am having - think it should be fine but will ask either way.

Mine takes a few minutes too.. BUT my issue is sometimes it isn't responding and decides its 0 degrees then 90, then 0. never goes above.

a while ago I noticed the temp gauge bouncing, moving mostly when I did cornering.

This told me I may have a lose connection somewhere.. is this BAD/Dangerous or just a ball ache.

its kinda 50/50 if it works, but is calming itself down lately i.e. working fine.

I was informed the sensor is on the right rear of engine if look at the front of the car.. is this correct? much to replace?

I have had a few issues with this car (2002 mk4 gttdi) since getting it. always started, always drove.. mainly silly things have gone wrong.

ciara, my 2000 1.9tdi seems to do the same, the gauge seems to just move around as it wishes...not past 90 however but then will just go to 0, sometimes breaking hard will move it back to 90.

anyone an suggestion sof the possible fault? and how easy/hard it would be to fix?

As tdigolf suggests, replacing the coolant temperature sender is a sensible place to start.

I would think so.. Looks the exact same as what was in my polo years ago.

only thing I ponder is that - I was told it is [if looking at the engine - head on] on the top right corner of the engine bay?

my coolant is on the near top left of my engine bay!.. is this the ONLY one and very same sensor?

PS: Before replacing the temp sensor.. DRAIN the fluid out. otherwise it gushes out once the sensor [SEE THE SENSOR] is removed.
