Hi, I've a problem with the steering on my '05 tdi - there is noise when steering and gets progressively louder the more the wheel is turned to full lock. It suddenly happened during the cold spell when my wheel arches where bunged tight with frozen slush, so i suspect it has damaged something. Not sure it its likely to le a leak of fluid or belt issue.

Im not particularly mechanical other that basic servicing so any help much appreciated.

    Cheers

UPDATE - I checked the fluid level and its def low on flud, was only serviced couple of weeks ago so def think the frozen slush has damaged something. Where is the steering hydralic fluid lines run, ie is it likely they could be damaged. Also what type of hydraulic fluid is needed - the manual refers to fact it needs 'special' fluid but cant see recommended type anywhere! Thanks Again...

    Hi there,

cant shed any light on the issue im affraid. Just wanted to say I have exactly the same issue and have had for the last 6 months or so. Touchwood doesnt seem to be getting any worse.

Steering does seem to struggle a bit when car is at standstill i.e when parking.

    regards,

    Andy

It is getting louder on mine too, as the steering approaches the full lock. I think it is normal. I've read somewhere that it is no good to keep turning to the full lock when it is not necessary. Usually when the steering hits the full lock on mine, I just pull it back slightly so it does not really make much difference to the angle of the turn, but the pump (i think it is the power steering pump) is not so lound.

sounds like your power steering pump if it is losing fluid thats what it can be buddy best thing to do is get it checked out by a mechanic or power steering rack/driveshaft specialists have you put some power steering fluid in it if not try that try it should reduce the noise abit and if it is still losing it then thats what it can be i would advise you to don't drive the car much as without any power steering fluid in it as the power steering motor is made out of aluminium so will get damaged alot you need the mineral green power steering fluid let us know how you get on all the best
