Passat 2.0 TDI, 133k mileage, 56plate, broke down today and quick check with scanner revealed the following codes:

    05488, 04720, 04160, and 08518

I had to be rescued and await the investigation by the garage. Car broke down 3 weeks ago and needed a new injector. Any advice on the codes?

Those don't look like VAG codes. What did you use to get the codes.

    Hi

I have a 2006 Audi A4 which has also broken down displaying the same codes as yours.

I am using a Vag - Com reader that has not let me down before so I feel that the codes are correct.

Could you let me know what they find wrong with your car.

    Regards Michael

Those codes are not listed in VAG’s own Guided Fault Finding or on Ross Techs Wiki

    http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Category:Fault_Codes

so they cannot be VAG fault codes, I do not see how VAG-COM has produced them. Can you post a print out of the fault code report?

This is a photograph of the read out. I reset the codes and it is now showing 05399 unknown error code 007 short to ground Intermittent.

The origional codes before I reset was as below plus 04160 unknown error code 006 short to plus intermittent

08518 Unknown error code 009 open or short to ground.

The history is that the engine died on a dual carrriage way and would not start. Got RAC out and just before they arrived engine started but pre heat symbol flashe for a while then went out.

used car for 50 plus miles now will not start and engine management light displayed when cranking engine

So you have a BRD engine. I think part of the problem is that the VAG-COM level you are using is way out of date, you need to update it before continuing.

Crasher many thanks for your input. I had thought that I should update but there seems a large cost involved.

I have looked at your web site and see your experienced in these matters so could you please advise if the VAG - COM - or later version is still OK or is there anything better that I could consider using.

    Regards Michael

VAG-COM is now called VCDS and the cost of updating depends on where your cable came from, basically if it is a legal one or not.

    http://www.ross-tech.com/products.html

I do this for a living and I use VCDS, I wish I could justify spending literally thousands on something better but I can’t make a case for t.

The answer to my problems were faulty no 1 injector and no 2 glow plug.

Had the injector and 4 glow plugs replaced plus the internal wiring loom as a belts and braces job. Hopefully that will be the end of it.
