A miss on idle is usually a faulty injector wiring loom. The rattle is more worrying. It could be a sign of cam/follower damage which might also cause the idle miss. Either way you need to get a code read and then look under the cam cover.

Definite camshaft/follower problem. A valve is not opening/closing correctly which will give you the popping noise.
Expensive job but can be done without the head off.
I came in to this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

I repaired a similar problem with my friends 1.9tdi octavia. After removing the cam cover i found that the camshaft had worn through the follower. I removed the cams, cleaned it up, and replaced all the followers along with the camshaft. All of this was done without removing the head, and was a failry straightforweard job.

He had the parts for it on ebay, and i think it cost less than £250 for the whole job.

If this has been caused by neglected oil changes and/or blocked oil-ways
and oil pick-up, then you should run an engine flush through the engine
now, rather than after doing the cam and followers. There's also a chance
that it might clean-out a blocked tappet.

    Regards
    Jim
