Hi there,im just looking for ideas.I have a 2003 golf tdi 130bhp(i think although it could be 150)Having filled up the tank with diesel ive done around 180 miles and its already on half a tank with no visible signs of a leak. The readout tells me im doing anywhere between 38 and 55 mpg but i would of thought a full tank would of got me atleast 500 to 600 miles, any ideas anyone?

You need to benchmark it, i.e.

    Log the fuel quant
    Log your miles

    Then do some calcs.

Also on the MFD (multifunction display) look at the average mpg not the instant which it would appear your looking at. The average has a circle with a diagonal line through it as a symbol next to it.

Also describe your journies; road types, traffic, how heavy your right foot is etc.

Driving conditions and styles are so varied that anything between the high 30's and low 60's is possible in a TDI.

You are getting the same fuel economy as my GT TDi 115bhp... i get on average about 400-450miles per full tank, and average about 45mpg. There was a thread recently, where other members said they get 500-600 or even more from a full tank. Was shocked! The maximum i've ever got is 540 from a full tank, and thats from a full tank to the warning sign coming on. It was mainly motorway mileage and average 55mpg.

    Hi,
    I had a Golf TDI 130.
Everyday mixed driving returned between 43 and 46mpg.
I seem to remember getting to half full between 280 and 300 miles of everyday mixed driving.
On the motorway with cruise set at 70mph it returned 57mpg.
    Cheers,
    Jonathan

To pick up on your first post....If you're unsure what power your engine is, there will be a sticker underneath the carpet in the boot, it will show the power in Kw, which you will need to convert into hp. The conversions are in the manual.

Had two Mk4 Golf 1.9 TDI's (90bhp version) - one 1999 T-reg and another 2001 51-reg and if I drove carefully (ie. at 65mph on the motorway's, several hundred miles at a time) the fuel economy was exceptional - 65mpg! This was calculated from the quantity of fuel put in to fill the tank and the miles travelled. a good 615miles per tank. Admittedly, I didn't do the grandad driving often, but was interesting to see how high I could push the mpg. Fantastic engines!

on my 115 bhp gt tdi, i average between 450/600 miles a tank, based on my driving. i mainly do town driving, which is a pain, id get around 450/500 on a tank with that, m.way is a lot more economical and id probably get closer to the 600 mark if i were on the m.way.

MFD says average for my usual 150 miles a week is around 35mpg. it honestly doesnt sound like you're doing too badly
