    Hi

One of the first things I've done as I've just bought a MkV GTi is to get a new head unit to replace the old RCD300. I've heard lots of comments regarding software/firmware upgrades, power drains etc but cannot seem to get a definitive answer. So here are the facts - can any one offer any advice?

I've bought a 2008 (March) GTi with factory fit RCD 300.

    I've also bought an RCD 510 from (I've been told, ) a Mk6 Golf.

I've asked VW if I need a canbus upgrade or anything else and they say no. However it may need a firmware upgrade? I'm not entirely clear on what these are.

I'm having the headunit installed by an auto electrician at the same time as having a Parrot CK3100 kit fitted.

Does anyone think I will need anything doing to the headunit?
    Should I need any updates/upgrades?
Do I need to go to my local VW dealer for anything?

The spec codes on the unit are -
    VW MID RVC UP1 BVX
    FD 0110
    HW 040
    SW 0167

    Serial starts VW 3C8 035.

I dont really know what these codes refer to but presume hardware and software installs.

    Any advice would be appreciated.
Finally, does anyone know what plugs into the rear Video port? Is it just for the optical reversing camera or can anything else go into it?

    Thanks.

    Hi Chris

The RCD510 has the option to have bluetooth built in, but like everything VW its an 'extra'. The standard VW kit is not very good and doesn't work well with a lot of phones. The aftermarket kit to get is made by FISCON, a German company and gives the headunit full control of most phones including Android. However it costs around 400.00. Given that you can pick up a used RCD510 in very good condition for 275 on Ebay as I did, it's a lot of extra money.

I had all this fitted on Thursday and I'm very happy with it all. The RCD510 has got a much better sound quality than the old unit as internal components are much better, so I can delay changing speakers for quite a while. Its very simple to use and I have no problems so far. It plays CD's, MP3's on CD or MP3/WMA from SD cards. I have a 32GB one with all my music now in the slot.

The Parrot 3100 that I installed uploads and syncs the phone book and works through the radio. The unit fits neatly above the top corner of the radio and for the cost, is good value. It works, is cheap and updateable. Now what you can say for the VAG BT.

As for power drain, I spoke to VW who told me that with an 08 car, I should not have a problem and so far I haven't. If your car is older you will probably need to change what is called the CANBUS. this is not something I know much about but I know you can pick them up from Ebay and fit them yourself. Personally, I would pay someone to do this once you had the bits, then if they fry the electrics, they fix it! VW quoted me 50.00 to install.

Hope this answers your question. I will post some pics soon too. very happy with the colours and it looks very smart and 'factory'.
