I recently got another set of 17" 5 spoke rims for my A4 Quattro 1.9 TDi Sport Avant. Then a set of 4 near new winter tyres, two Vredstein and two Avons off ebay (in Sept!) for £260
The car is awesome, there's a steep hill (1 in 4) close to me, it was covered in compacted snow, 2k revs in 2nd and it pulled all the way to the top, traction control light never came on once. I didn't really expect 235/45x17's to work well as I considered them too wide for serious snow traction. i'm suitably impressed. The only downside to the car is as it's a sport is low ground clearance.

Even on Dunlop SP Sport Maxx's my Quattro has performed admirably in the recent snow. But I know what you mean, they really do make it a go anywhere car don't they!

Haven't bothered fitting my winters yet this year, haven't really needed to and they haven't got an awful lot left in them mileage wise anyway, so I'm saving them for my annual trip to The Alps in February....

BRILLIANT ARN'T THEY! But seriously a word of warning from personal experience. The undertray has 3 slots in it to cool the engine in the summer months these in snowy conditions funnel loose snow/slush up and pack it between the engine and belly pan, this makes it belly out downwards until the mountings give way and then you have a massive snow plough that shovels up everything in its way. Mine collected alsorts including a metal bar, branches and every dead leaf in a 2 mile strip. Gaffer tape these up to prevent it or remove the under tray. I spent 1 and a half hours layed at the side of the road sorting it out. One last thing when driving on snow you should turn of the traction control (ESP). Have fun
