Oldsurfdude, thanks for reporting back. It's easier to search for a particular fault if you know it's there somewhere!

The problem is solved. It was water ingress via the nearside light cluster. The foam/rubber seal which should be stuck to the cluster had come away on one corner and was letting the rain in. After bottling out when trying to prise off the trim I booked it in to a local body shop - Autospray, Penryn. They located the problem, and while I waited fixed it (I hope!) for £24, can't say fairer than that!

I am also getting this issue, especially after recent rain fall !! Can you tell me which rubber seal you replaced, so hopefully I can sort my one out. It is happening on the n/s so hoping its exactly the same problem.

I have this too. Mine has a new bootlid fitted late last year by Audi as the old one rusted away. Audi said they couldn't find a fault and I found the grommets had been removed.

Water also gathers at the base of the rear screen in mine, and then runs down the side into the boot or up my arm when I open the tailgate.

Its on my list, one day...

Had same problem which water came in from near side light cluster ,boot all soaked and water went to DVD unit so close to fire them. cheap fix with clear sealant couple of quids, applied from inside boot, works great, no more leaking.

Hi Joe, if you remove the light cluster, you will see that there is a foam rubber seal which seals the cluster to the tailgate structure. It should be stuck to the light cluster, but on mine it had come away at one corner. The bodyshop used a little bit of silicone type sealant to stick the seal back to the cluster and no more water in the tailgate!

So its the cluster on the tail gate that's leaking !! and not the actual light unit.

The light unit/cluster would have to be quite badly cracked to allow rain in directly. Looking from outside the car, obviously there is a gap around the light unit, between the plastic light cluster and the steel tailgate. The rain runs into this gap, so unless the seal (that you probably can't see unless you remove the light unit) is doing it's job, the rain can find it's way past the seal and into the tailgate.,
