Hi. I have come to the forum to get advice from members who seem to have a lot of expertise about passat. Just wanting to know that my passat whilst idle on standstill shows -- -- on instant mpg. This is reducing my average mpg whilst on standstill which you usually would'nt expect. On my mates car which is manual in the same scenario his is showing the average mpg on the instant mpg whilst on standstill. His was showing 40 on average and then 40 on instant aswell.

Is this meant to happen? Could someone pls check there computer if they have an auto/tip.

Mine is a 51 reg with 133k miles.

    Cheers

Yes, if you're not moving, how can you have an mpg other than zero?
It is meant to be this way.
Other makes such as Vauxhall/Opel and Saab, switch to litres per hour when stationary and usually show something around 0.1 l/hr.

yes it is true that you only do 0 miles to the gallon but the thing is that it affects the average mpg whilst on standstill. My friends car is a manual and when stationary the instant MPG reads the same as the average MPG thus not making a difference to the average when stationary. But my car is a tip-auto so i dont know if it because of this that it is at 0. Any one with a auto could you pls check and let me know as i am getting about 24mpg on average around town. It seems to be a bit too low for a diesel.

I would expect your average to go down. On the other cars you mention if you are saying the average stays the same (and it is not just a readout) then the trip computer is going to be showing a incorrect average. If I leave work late the traffic is sheite and I am sat at the lights about a mile from work and the trip is set to average then the figure just drops as you watch it. This is exactly what you would expect, using fuel going nowhere.

That's why this new low emissions Polo (forget the name blue something??) and the low emissions BMW series 1 will switch off the engine whilst you are stopped at the lights.

Thanks for all the replies. I don't know why the golf tdi manual does not show the average falling on the computer when on a standstill. What average would you expect from a auto-trip. I get about 28mpg average around town. Is that what is to expected because on parkers it says 39mpg?????????????/

I am not sure my figures are around town. To me that would be driving through Manchester? I would only get about 20mpg I reckon.

Trip to work one way involves 15 miles, 13 of them are slightly busy motorway. Just recently I have become quite light on my right foot. I am getting average of 34mpg. (2.0/130bhp petrol)

I have a 130 tip - get about 27 mpg round town....and the mpg goes to --.-- when stationary. The mpg round town is great but I think it's just a consequence of the auto box - however the ease of driving more than makes up for it.

I have a 130tdi sport, 53 plate with 43k on the clock. Around town with alot of stop starting i get 35mpg on a run 9 can get upto 60mpg, which is not bad as the car is generally has the ife and kids in with all the rubbish that they bring along.
