Hey guys, first post, so apologies if I'm retreading old ground.

I've just purchased a 56 plate, 2.0 Golf GT TDI. Currently it has an RCD 300 head unit but I'm looking at upgrading to possibly an RCD510. A couple of questions though before I actually buy a new head unit.

    1. Will this fit OK in my Golf? Or will I need any fachia/adaptors for it to fit perfectly?

    2. Will this be a simple enough swap to do ot will I need any extra bits and pieces?

If you could answer the above, that'd be great.

    Cheers guys.

hi mate welcome to the site

now the 510 is a great headunit you will more than likely have to have a ccm software upgrade otherwise it will run your battery flat, you can fit an mfd2 satnav unit that is simple plug and play, best thing is do a search on here of the 510 it will bring up a load of threads about it, then go in to the how to section, BEN wrote a great how to remove a golf mk5 headunit, its full of very useful info mate

great car have a look at the mk5 tdi owners group in my sig below, join up and post up pics of your car

Cheers for that. Will have a nose about.

The main reason for upgrading is so I can plug my iphone into it for the music. I'm not overly bothered about bluetooth/handsfree and a lot of the solutions I've found with keeping the RCD 300 cost around a £100 anyway, so why not spend a little more and get a new head unit?!

I had read about upgrading the CAN Gateway (not that I know really what that is) but I had also read about a firmware update which stops the battery drain issue. I figure this is what you mentioned?

i have the mfd2 cd satnav in mine and i have my iphone connected, i did fit the ipod adaptor in the centre consol but that was crap, nano worked fine but the iphone was i nightmare, i was given mine but you can buy a connects2 off ebay for about £40 that plugs into the quadlock on the back of the radio (wiring connector) and then you run the lead into the glove box or ashtray one thing i do recommend is you make sure you get a iphone charge adaptor for £12 it changes the charge rate from 12v (gen 123) to 5v gen 456 and iphone, then you can control your iphone thro the radio

Not overly worried about sat nav either as I've got a decent Tom-Tom but the MFD2 does look very nice!

I'm going to do some more research and keep an eye on the prices of the RCD510 on ebay and see if it's a viable option.

    Thanks for your help.

Cheers for that Richard, but I've gone and got an MFD2. I managed to pick it up in the last few secondson ebay for £102.

Need to look at getting the connection and a cradle for my iphone now, and how easy it'll be to install. Any decent guides on how to remove my RCD300 and install the MFD2 out there? I've been looking but the ones I keep finding aren't much help.

    Thanks for your help.

Sorry for all the questions but:
Can someone point me in the direction of a cable from the mfd2 to my iPhone 4 please.
Also are there any issues with battery drainage with this particular headunit and a 56 plate Golf? I'm not going to have to fiddle with the CAN gateway am I?

    Cheers again gents!

I've seen the Kenwood unit in a mate's Toureg and it really is the mutts nuts. Much better than the VW SatNav. The only downside is that (as far as I saw) it doesn't integrate the front and rear parking sensors like the RCD510 does.

Do you know what is necessary to integrate the parking sensors if retrofitting an RCD510?
