Hi. Our Sharan's starter motor died last night, and current funds don't allow a new replacement so I have to resort to scouring local breakers. Does anyone know whether the starter from other manual 1.9Tdis from the Sharan / Galaxy / Alhambra range around the same age (R-reg) will fit, and if so, which ones? Engine code is AHU.

    Thanks guys,

    Chris

I am currently dismantling my 1996 Passat 1.9 TD L Umwelt with an AAZ engine and desperately comparing the various bits with those on my 97 Sharan CL with AHU engine.

The Sharan starter is type 0986 016 980 1.8 kW
The Passat starter is type 0986 016 310 1.7 kW
but apart from the slightly lower power I can see no other difference externally.

There may be internal differences and perhaps an expert engineer from this forum can comment, but I would expect any given starter would be found over a wide range of years and models.

I have now got both starters on the table and they are not the same, but the solenoids are both Bosch 0 331 303 147. I will test and swap the solenoids in the morning. Keep an eye on my other thread for progress.

You wrote "Hi. Our Sharan's starter motor died last night" Can you describe the symptoms? Does the solenoid click or engage, do the dashboard lights dim? Have you checked the earth connections from the battery to the engine block and the positive big and little connections onto the solenoid? Or the cable from the alternator to the battery? Maybe the salt has got in and corroded things.

    Hope this helps.

OK, I swapped the solenoid from a 96 Passat 1.9 TD AAZ part# 0 331 303 147 onto my Sharan 1997 TDI CL AHU and have now got a running car again.

Had to remove the intercooler duct section that runs near the starter motor, and fiddle around with the cable holder which is bolted on to one of the starter mounting bolts, but no big deal - just spanners and confidence and pentrating fluid.

To repeat the symptoms, car got increasingly reluctant to turn over, eventually refusing altogether. Althought there was a click from the system when I turned the "ignition" key to the start position, the starter didn't turn and the dashboard lights did not dim as they would with a flat battery.

    Hope this helps someone.OD
