Hello i am looking to change the alloys on my A6 from the Le Mans 19" to either 18 or 17". What should I be looking out for as far as getting the right fit.

I was looking at either 18" 245/40R18's or 17" 225/45R17's, however I'm unsure if I need to look at the size of the alloy as well as the wheel.

    Any help would be appreciated

    Hi,
    I'm no expert but,
Why are you changing the wheels, is it ride comfort or for better winter snow traction/snow chains etc?
If you are changing the wheels for non oem ones then you would need to look at the wheel off set, a good wheel supplier should know what wheels fit you car.
As for the tyres they should have the same rolling circumference (eg. as the width of the tyre decreases the wall height of the tyre increases) as your original ones.

    Le mans 19" 255/35 r19 are 8.5J
    245/40 r18 and 225/45 r17 I think will both be 8J

If it was for better comfort what about trying 245/40 r19 that are fitted to my allroad 19" 8.5J 20 spoke style alloys, to give the tyre a little more side wall (softer ride) save money and keep the style. You would need to check that the rolling circumference was right for your car. If it's different then it would effect mph reading and more. Maybe the computer could be reset with new values?

Don't know if that helps or not. If any of my advice is wrong I'm sure some will put you wright or give you more info.

    Hello

Well I'm mainly changing as I find the 19"'s a little hash. I'm at a point that I need to change the front two tyres and it seems that I can get a set of 18" A4 5 spoke Sline alloys with tyres 6-7mm tread for £400 which is effectivley the price of the two front tyres on the 19" rims. My only concern is that they won't fit. The PCD is the same and they fit 18" on the A6 S-Line so by my reckoning they will fit.

I'm happy to be proved wrong as it will save me a bad buy.

Now that sounds like a deal guys?? They should be a perfect fit and the differnce of those wheels fromthe 255x35/x19 to the 225x50x17 will be approx 0.61% if I remember rightly.
    How do I know?
Because I just changed up from 225x50x17 to 255x35x19 and they look awesome on my A6, with the SE suspension I don't find them too harsh at all but probably would if I lower it at some point.

From personal and recent experience it will be a straight swap with no issues and the speedo differences will be minimal.

    Good luck

To be honest, I'd say the ride quality is 99% based on your suspension setup rather than the wheels/tyres. My last car was an A6 S line with 18" wheels and 245/40/18 tyres and the same suspension as my current Le Mans, and the ride was no different to my current car with 255/35/19 tyres.

This seems to be confirmed by Jim's comments too - he switched from 225/50/17 to 255/35/19 wheels and tyres on his SE, and in his original post commented that the ride was virtually unchanged.

    Just my tuppence

Hey thanks for the offer, however I want to keep 19's so at least I can put them back on when I come to change cars.

    Cheers
