A4 170 TDI fuel ecomeny

Just bought a 2008 57 A4 170 TDI and only getting average 30mpg is this commen or am I doing something wrong not to get any more mpg??????????

The 170 is not known for its economy but that seems a little low to me mine in city driving alone will do around 37-38 mpg and longer runs i am looking at 45ish.

How many miles do you get to the average tankful?

I normally get around 550 miles in normal weather conditions, but with the cold weather between 450 - 500 miles

I get between 40-45 but the cold weather makes a big difference, so its down at the moment

I have had over 600 miles on a tank full to the brim but that was a steady drive from Norfolk to North Devon

I'm about 37 - 39 over the last few thousand miles. I've got 40k on the clock.

Check your tyres are properly inflated, and try and be more anticipatory in your driving. Eg my missus will still have her foot down when approaching red lights, then brake hard when she needs to stop. She is always grateful for the advice when I remind her she might just want to coast up to the lights rather than brake, accelerate, brake etc etc.

I used to turn the a/c off when not needed but this only has a very minor impact on economy - you keep the unit in better nick when it's on all the time.

Also the DPF uses fuel when it regens, if you do lots of short trips and cold starts this may be more often than usual.

My economy is really bad to be honest. I average about 30, but that is mainly about town driving. I know it's a quattro, but I'd still expect more than this. It came as quite a shock after 4 Happy years of my old 1.9 tdi avant where the worst I ever got was about 40. I get about 400 miles to the tank, but I only have a 63 litre tank as it's a quattro. I don't drive the car hard by the way, Just potter about usually. Cheers MMM
