My first weeks consumption was 19mpg.

If you drive round town, thats what I got.

I soon learnt to boot it to make it change up and then back off. That got me to around the mid to high 20's.

I ripped a rather hard driving viscous fan and fitted a Kenlowe. That got a couple more.

The biggest increase I have found was by reading Nora's thread, mentioned above. I reprogrammed mine to the USA setting. It will now change up to 3rd at 30 and 4th at 40 but only under low load (very light throttle). During the summer I was getting 30 ish MPG, I'm now on 28. I have an 11 mile town comute to work. On a run I'm getting 33-35. I always have the climate on and I'm sure thawing the car out in a morning doesn't help.

Thanks Kid Jenson and Sparky Charlie. I dont have a Vag-com but car is being serviced in fortnight so i will pass on the info to them and get them to check it for me. If the steering buttons only work in D when the learn is disabled this might of already been done as i can change up and down already with these buttons. For the last 2 weeks average is now 16mpg with this weather so looking forward to the service. I will post how it is after.
