    Hello,

Please can someone confirm, will 245 tyres fit on the rear of my 2001 A6 Avant 2.5 tdi quattro? They are 17 inch.

    Thanks

Do you mean you wish to fit wider tyres only on the back than what is on the front?

I have a 4.2, which has 255/40/17's as standard, but the wheels arches are wider to that of a standard A6, so it doesn't necessarily mean that a 245 will fit yours.

That's a pretty wide tyre. Is it for show purposes or are you lacking in grip?

Thanks for the reply mate, i have some 17 inch RS4 wheels that i want to fit, need to replace 2 of the tyres. The other 2 tyres are 225 45 17 (to be used on the front), however i have some 245's lying around that i want to fit.

Just didnt want them to catch etc.

Good luck. I assume you realise that a 245/45/17 is a couple of cm's bigger in diameter than a 225/45/17. My local tyre place would put a tyre on an alloy for £10. Worth trying one to see if it rotates freely.

235s on the back are standard on mine, with genuine 17" RS4 style alloys.

They might just fit. But an A6 with 17" wheels should really have 235s.

I was only thinking about this last night, mine has 235/45/17 as standard but looks like there is loads of room for 245 to fit under there.

On a modern car with ABS I would make absolutely sure that all the wheels and tyres have the same rolling diameter (unless it's designed that way, like a Porsch or Lotus Elise), so I wouldn't mix and match tyre sizes front to rear.

On a quattro I definitely wouldn't mix and match tyre sizes front to rear.

Whether or not you'll have clearance problems with 245/45/17s depends on the width and offset of the wheels. On the back there looks to be plenty of clearance, but the front with standard 235/45/17 tyres on standard 7.5x17 ET45 wheels the clearance between the inside of the tyre and the supension is very tight. A lower offset (ET35 for example) will give put the wheel further out into the arch and give more clearance for the suspension, and on a wider rim (8J for example) the tyre will sit flatter and bulge less, agan giving more clearance.
