    Hi Stuart,
My car is the 2006, 2.0litre 170 SEL and has done 58k miles. I have read the manual but it is rather confusing as it says that a cambelt change should be done at 60k then there is another booklets with it which says ammendment and cambelt change to be done at 80k.

Can you let me know what mileage I should do the cambelt and water pump change and is there anything else I should consider. I have heard that the 2.0litre engines have some problems with it, which were only rectified after 2008 on the Passat.

I bought my Jan 06 Passat in Jan 09 from a mainline VW dealer. (2.0Tdi)

I got a card from them Jan 10 this year, saying cambelt change at 4 years or , i forget the mileage, nevertheless i had it done.

VW do charge alot more, and if you can state to them that a local reputable indie will do exactly the same work for a lot less they should match the price.

    Hi Hayat

Martin's the expert at things like the timing belt intervals, see his site here:

    https://sites.google.com/site/1810ma...ce-information

As for other issues with the 2.0 litre engines, I'm not sure if there's any preventative work you can do other than ensure VW have done any necessary recalls etc.

My local VW dealer done my cambelt 08 passat for 399.99 with water pump , at first they said it has to be 3 years old to qualify bla blah blah

Cambelt change on the 170 is indeed 58k

No it isn't, it's the same as the 140 bhp @ 80k, a 2006 model will be advised to change on the 4 yr schedule regardless of mileage, hth.

These offer's on DSG, Pads etc ended on the 1st of Jan, hopefully VW will extend it or re-introduce it soon, and it's only participating dealers, so always check the VW website to find out who is doing the offers and who isn't, my local one suprise suprise wasn't, however one 20 miles away was.

I have spoke to a few dealers and indy's and they all said the same thing , unless there's massive conspiracy regarding the cam belt change

DSG4ME, the offer I looked at had the VAT at 20%. So it must be current, very current.

It's not a conspiracy, it is ignorance. The correct VW figures are on my website. They are not my opinion, they are VW's own figures.

I went to my local vw dealer (Lookers, Burnley), who said that the timing belt change should be done at 60k miles or 4 years which ever comes first. The price they quoted me was just to change the timing belt (tensioners etc not included) was £299 but said this could go up as it was 2010 price and with waterpump (£100) it would be £399.

I have found a garage (Academy Group) in Greater Manachester who state they specialise in German cars and they have given me a price of £380 for the timing belt (including tensioners) and waterpump. They state that they will be using vw recomended parts.

I am tempted to use them. Does anyone know anything about the garage? would much appreciate feedback before I make appointment at garage (am thinking sometime nextweek).
