Don't know if anyone has posted this link, but it might be useful considering the amount of people who ask about cambelt, brake pad replacement prices, etc.

It applies to VWs 3-10 years old. In the literature sometimes it says it applies only to engines up to 2.0 litres, but that fact is sometimes not too prominetly displayed, unlike the 3-10 years old condition. But I doubt if many of us have engines over 2.0 litres anyway.

    http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/s...rice-servicing

For example, the cambelt figure is £299 and £399 for the water pump as well, and these figures have been quoted on quite a few threads.

Of course, there's presumably nothing to stop individual dealers quoting less, so it might still pay to haggle and compare prices.

I wonder how much more it is for the newer vehicles? I suspect the prices quoted would be a good target for owners of newer vehicles as well

How would or does this compare to indy pricing?

    If I had a 7+ year old VW, I don't think I'd be going to a dealer....

I rang 3 different dealers last year for servicing prices. All gave me a different price and all have different hourly labour rates. I've also rang different dealers for the same part, and got different prices.

Think when my car is out of warranty I would take it to an Indy every other service.

Newer vehicles don't qualify for 'fixed-price' and they charge more...because they can!

I think they are trying to attract people whose cars are out of warranty and are more likely to go to indies.

Indeed the VW/Indy choice isn't an exact science, and by the same token why do you choose a cut-off point of 7 years old?

Surely a 5 year old car with 30,000 on the clock would be a different proposition from a similar aged car with 200,000?

And I don't want to try telling a grandmother how to suck eggs, but there are numersous different factors in the equation other than just price.

For example, with a thing like tyres I've never bothered with VW, because I know I can get the same thing kit elsewhere a lot cheaper and more conveniently.

On the other hand, you could save a hundred quid or more getting an indy to do your timing belt, but if it snaps or they **** it up and the engine is ruined, would you feel more confident about getting recompense from an indy or a VW dealer?

By the same token, cheap parts can be a false economy - I once drove a taxi that went through a set of front brake pads once every six weeks or so, whereas my own VW pads are lasting about two and a half years (not quite the same mileage, mind you, but still lasting several times as long).

And there's issues like goodwill - it might be a good idea to get a couple of out-of-warranty services done at VW in case something big goes bang.

The prices are just a starting point.

Indeed, but there's nothing to stop them discounting on prices for newer cars, and surely the fixed prices they proffer for the older ones represents a good target.

Hi, this is my first thread on any forum/s I hope I do it write. I have recently purchased a 2006 VW Passat 2.0 170 SEL TDI and have visited my local VW dealer (Lookers in Burnley, Lancs). In the dealership there are notices promising to beat any like for like work within a 5 mile radius. My car has done 58k and I have been advised by them that around 60k I would need a timing belt change and possibly tensioners as well. They have priced the whole job at £380.

I feel that is quite a high price, does anyone know any garages that I can get a price quote from. Also would like to know about extended warranties - do I go to the VW dealers or indies.

    Thanks

Just had my 08 car serviced this week at a main dealer, and these signs were in evidence ( my car is 2.5yrs old. However I haggled them to be £10 cheaper than my local indie, who did the first service.

As warranties have to be honoured there is no problem with shopping around. IMO fsh is overrated anyway and most good indies have better mechanical knowledge than a main dealer ( computer says no....) and very simliar diagnostic equipment.

Go wherever you get good value and service???

Well since your car is four years old you should qualify for the £299 price which is the subject of this thread. For the price quoted you should get the water pump changed as well. The price doesn't include the water pump by any chance?
