In case there is anyone out there who is even slower than me at finding out these things, there is now a Haynes Manual on these vehicles (2005 - 2008). Also one on the A3 8P (2003 - 2008).

Typical, you wait for years, and then two come along at once.

they aren't anything special though are they? for many jobs it just says "refer to main dealer"

you'd be better off using Elsawin, the exact info the dealers use - its far more comprehensive.

    I got mine from motoringbooksofbookham

    http://stores.ebay.co.uk/MOTORING-BOOKS-AND-MANUALS

at £14.49 each post free. But when I checked just now, the one for the A4 (Haynes 4885) was missing from the site.

I've been looking for such a manual, thanks for the the tips. However, if you visit the Haynes website and look up the description of this manual, it's distinguished by what it doesn't include -

    Audi A4 Petrol & Diesel (Jan 05 to Feb 08) 54 to 57
Saloon and Estate (Avant) (model code B7) with 4-cylinder engines.
Does NOT cover Quattro, S4, RS4 or Cabriolet, models with Tiptronic transmisson, or revised A4 range introduced March 2008.

    Petrol: 1.8 litre (1781cc) and 2.0 litre (1984cc) 4-cyl, inc. turbo.
Does NOT cover 1.6 litre or V6 or V8 engines.

    Turbo-diesel: 1.9 litre (1896cc) and 2.0 litre (1968cc) 4-cyl.
    Does NOT cover V6 engines.
I have an '06-plate A4 2.0 TDI S-Line multitronic. I guess that's not covered in this manual. Good to know before buying.

Yes this is often true. They are great for more simple cars but I have found for high end cars they quote the above a lot.

What I do find them good for is showing you that you don't always need to use that expensive gold plated VAG tool for a job and how you can make your own.

It should cover your car for everything except the gearbox but the look of it. It's on my Christmas list anyway!

Yes, it's as well to know what these Manuals don't cover - my A3 DSG is not covered, nor is my A4 quattro - but that still leaves 99% of stuff covered, and I find Haynes very good on the awkward things like trim removal which are pretty common.

    @Kalavera, thanks.

    I read this text -

Does NOT cover [...] models with Tiptronic transmisson
to mean they're not covered at all. Hardly the case though

Maybe Halfords are stocking these manuals now as I encountered one this morning in Halfords in Reading. The only one they had - I bought it.

    > Current: B9 2016 Audi A4 2.0 S-Line TFSI S Tronic. Mythos Black. A connected computer on wheels
    > Previous: B7 2006 Audi A4 2.0 S-Line TDI Multitronic. Pearlescent Black. High low-tech
