Hello again, I have now managed to find myself a replacement ABS unit with the same part codes as my present one. I don't wish to remove the whole exhisting pump if I can help it, just the module. Upon closer inspection it looks like the module is located on the underside of the ABS pump. Does anyone happen to know if it's possible to remove the module without removing the entire ABS unit or am I in for a weekend of break fluid spills and a lot of swearing. Thanks in advance, 1998 A3.

you can remove just the module but its easier to take off the whole unit
bleeding wise to do it properly you need to do abs bleed with diag machine/vcds

Hi Towcestervag, thanks for your help with the ABS pump. I found it easier to remove the whole unit and replace it, I know I'll have to use the VAG again, I think it's the only way to get all the air out the systm, followed by a bleed of all breaks, not my most loved job to perform! I'm still having a spot of bother with the F/O/S wheel speed sensor, I can reset it with vcds lite and the warning light will turn off but when I move the car a few fet it returns. I have checked the wiring through to the abs module and tested with a volt meter and there is no break in the wire. I know that my next step is to look at the abs sensor again but it's new and only been on the car for a few months, maybe it's not set in correct as I know this can cause problems. It also came from evilbay so maybe it's a cheap replacement? The reading is:

    front right 35-10---intermittent

I'll remove it and clean the sensor and look at the reluctor wheel too. Not sure where else to go with this? I'm beginning to think that vcds lite doesen't remove the fault but I cant see how? I'll use my friends full vag-com to research further. The abs pump has not been blead through yet so maybe thats also something to consider? Any thoughts would be welcomed,
    Thanks again buddy

I'm gonna take some time to investigate the sensor later today but in answer to your question,I'm sorry to say that it's not a genuine replacement part, thought I could save a few quid and get it from evilbay, hummmm, that will teach me! I'll keep you posted as to how I get along today. Cheers for now
