Hi all - I picked up a 54 plate 2.0 tdi se a couple of weeks ago from VW as an approved car.

All in all seems spot on and the missus loves it (it's hers).

However, when I first test drove it I noticed what you might call a quiet but noticeable whine, in and around 1500 - 1600 rpm just as the turbo starts boosting and then up to about 2200 - 2300. It's even more noticeable as you're setting off from a standstill. I asked dealer to investigate and fix, but agreed to buy it. When I collected within a mile or two I noticed it again.

Spoke to dealer who advised me that this slight whine is the norm on this engine and that there's nothing wrong. Another dealer has had a look and confirmed the story.

I'm still not convinced. My other car is a Seat Leon FR TDI - with similar engine, albeit more ponies, and there is absolutely nothing on this at all noise wise. The dealer says this is because the intercooler is different on mine.

Can anyone help - I don't know enough about this stuff to be sure either way and am slightly worried......

    Graham.

    Hi,

My 54 plate 1.9 TDi has similar symptom [high pitched whine] but happens only intemittently when accelerating up past approx 2500 RPM. Don't know what the problem is, but at least you're not alone! I'll just ignore and hope it doesn't get any worse.

The turbo on the 2.0 16v 140PS BKD engine is quite noisy and this is normal, however they are also extremely unreliable and prone to failure.
