    Oct 09 2.0TDI CR 110 Saloon.

Last Sunday, 45 miles B roads at 45-50 with a couple of heavy footed overtakes, 5 miles round town and 53 miles on the motorway at 65-70. Total of 103 miles and I averaged, on the MFD, 59.7mpg.

Current average on the second reading on the MFD is as follows

40.4mgp average over 212miles. Average speed 16mph. Travel time 13h 19min. I reset everytime I fill up, which was last Tuesday. Average driving is 60% round town, 10% motorway and 30% on the country B roads.

I do drive with a heavy foot. I fill the tank up about every two weeks with BP regular.

I will say this. The MFD readings are usually slightly over rated. My last 140PD Passat estate average about 34mpg, nothing like the current car. Extreme MPG is possible. My uncles 140CR saloon averaged, according to MFD, 68mpg over a 150 mile trip on the motorway. His car has 80k on the clock but he drove to get the best he could squeeze out of it.

All this reminds me of a guy I worked with many years ago, who was forever going on about his mpg.

Told me one Monday how he'd encountered a 'dreadful' traffic jam on his way to see family in Henley. 'Oh dear Dennis' I said, 'I bet that buggered up your mpg didn't it?'

'Well no', came the reply, 'I don't include trips if there are traffic jams'.

I thought this thread would lead to fishermen's tales, but I'm glad to see it's not.

I look at my average mpg occasionally, mainly as a health check on the engine, although I always have the mpg read-out on the MFD. I frequently see 75mpg on it....

...usually on the downhill stretch of dual-carriageway about a kilometre from where I live.

Next time I'm in the car I'll have a look at the average.

Just done Manchester to Middlesbrough - mainly motorway and dual carriageway - was booting it hard at times as I wanted to catch the end of the match .

'58 1.9TDI Highline Estate (with cycle rack fitted)

    According to the MFD:
    105 Miles in 1hr 55mins / Average Speed of 55MPH / Average MPG 43.8

Did Manchester to Cardiff last week with no cycle rack and in no rush (~5hrs) and got 55.8 mpg
I've got a coffee theme going here...
