Just read the ad. from our sponsor and see that they can take the 1.8T from 150bhp to 192bhp.

    Hmmmm.

Anyone done this and - crucially - what happened to petrol consumption at like-for-like speeds??

At a steady 60mph on a level road my 1.8T will indicate 41.0 mpg.
At the same speed what would Protune-chipped engine return?

I know that if the full whack is used then fuel will disappear (I have got the 1.8T to show as little as 22mpg ! )

Generally a remap will make the car more efficient if driven at like for like speeds, obviously if you use the extra power all the time it will use more. I have no experience with a 1.8T but have had my 130 TDi remapped and previously a BMW 318iS and both now use slightly less fuel.

That is what I would hope - because there are occasions when I drive gently .............

1.8T standard map has a noticeable 'step' in it.

At just under 2,000rpm in 5th it shows fuel consumption typically as 38-39mpg.
But when you ease it up a fraction to just on 2,000rpm there is a perceptible smoothing out and mpg shows 41-42.

I realise this is linked to various factors including the torque curve but if you have a good ear and 'feel' then it is quite noticeable.

    Hi Muddy.

i have remapped all the different 1.8t VAG variations VW AUDI Seat Skoda....

All the figures on my website are proven...but there is a good reason for the lack of MPG figures...

When you have the map done for some reason your right foot grows a size or 2 and gets a bit heavy

most who go for a map on a 1.8t want it for a reason and one reason only..

having said that i have had alot of reports back from customers that MPG has improved...but the fact is if your driving style stays the same you will be a couple of MPG better off no matter if you drive it like you stole it ...or like miss daisy on the way to church

Oh and never get fooled by them figures on your dash....they are the devils work...

    Thanks Johnny

I must admit I like my cars to have a split personality. Which is why in the past I have fitted superchargers or Rover V8's into suitable vehicles.

There are occasions when I amble along at modest speeds.
Usually when I am thinking about the Milk-the-Motorist regime initiated by Blair/Brown and continuing under the ConDems.
Elder brother reckons petrol is just 10p a litre in Egypt. How the heck can they run their economy without screwing motorists? Maybe the camels pay tax?

But there are also those occasions when a twerp in old Vauxhall Astra sits on your back bumper and you cannot resist the urge to have a blast .... up to the legal limit of course.

Quite right about the dash MPG figures - they are only a rough guide.

As most cars dont meet the manufacturers specified bhp, especially as they get on in life, does that mean there is a 42 bhp gain on whatever the power was before the map, or it will make 192 no matter what the previous power?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi 1.8Tpassatman

I think you already know the answer to this one. Just the way that original manufacturer's bhp can vary from car to car, the bhp a remap can take the car too can vary too. Sorry - but it is a bit of a 'how long is a piece of string' situation. What you really need to do is expect a bhp increase around the gap between the two quoted figures on the remapper's chart. You may get up to that maximum figure but if there is something about the mechanics of your engine (rather than the map) that held it back when it was new, it may or may not also hold the remap back a little too.

The sure thing is that you should still be delighted with the increase in power. It is the increase you'll notice rather than the absolute number of horses.

I'm in the London area. Feel free to call if you want to discuss more.

    Paul

Yup Yup all very true....like i said .... have remapped many various variations of the 1.8t on the different VAG models...

A recent Mk4 1.8t in decent condition pre map on the rollers was pushing out 143HP....after the tuned map was put on it was pushing 182HP..

Its all pro rata as to the percentage increase....the lower the starting figure has a small but knock on effect on the percentile increase in output...

The opposite is also true .... its simple physics really..... had a Seat version pushing 158HP and that broke the 200HP mark when remapped...

Didn't know the answer, hence why i asked.... And as "pro tune" in another post said that all the figures on his site are "proven", i thought i'd see what was meant by proven.
I havn't ever had a remap on any of my previous vehicles, and was interested in getting my passat done, but there is alot of scepticism on different forums about these maps, alot of people say upping your boost and fuel pressure does this, and that to your turbo, i realise half the people are scare-mungers and mainly its all down to how you drive, but if its turned up too much and suddenly bang..... I suppose its down to finding somebody you trust to do a good job... i've seen alot of diesels that have been remapped, and have heard good results, not heard alot about the petrol variants, anybody had one go bang shortly afyter?
Thanks for the swift reply, scott.
