It has always been difficult to select 1st gear on our POLO. There`s a less experienced driver behind the wheel now and I`m wondering if anyone else has had the same problem and if there`s an easy remedy.

Hi, there's no easy solution for you to do at home, but it could be rectified very painlessly at your local VW retailer.

It's likely that the gear linkage needs adjusting and this is fairly simple providing you have the correct jig to hold the gear lever in position while the gear linkage is adjusted.

There is a possibility that it's a clutch issue but i'd reccomend the cheaper option of a gear linkage adjust first.

    Hope this helps,

In my opinion it should certainly be no more than an hours labour.

ask them to quote you a price first if possible, although they will probably want to diagnose the fault themselves rather than take your (or my) word for it!

Thanks for help............will have mechanic have a look, most times its ok......othertimes feels like theres a small obstruction.......releasing the clutch and selecting 1st again generally does the trick.
