Hey vw gurus. Im new to this forum, (actually forums in general) so be patient. I have 2 problems that i need to troubleshoot. I have a 95 Golf CL 2-door with a 1.8. and completely stock (if that matters) and I dont know much about the cars history.. anyways.

    First issue!

So I parked on a hill the other day and put on my ebrake gently only to start slowly rolling forward. So i figured i would give it a good tug to stop rolling.

This failed, and the ebrake lever pulled back a good 5 inches or so higher than it should have, and something made a loud snapping noise. At first i figured something in the lever had snapped.

But the ebrake still sort of works. Actually it works fine except for that it only engages the rear right wheel and not the left.

Also when driving and braking I hear an unpleasent grinding noise from the rear left wheel. Drum brake it sounds like? Any ideas on what i broke? Or where i should be checking?

And my second issue is this.. only way more vague.

So i hear a subtle clicking/ticking noise from the front end.. i think front right but Im not sure. I can only hear it at low speeds and it sounds like I have 1 click/tick per wheel rotation. What throws me off is when I engage the brakes the clicking noise stops?

I tried lifting the front end and spinning the wheels while in neutral but I cant hear any clicking noises. I have no idea where to start. Anyways thanks in advance if you can help me.

Or if there is a thread you know of i should check out let me know! cheers!

Another country separated by a common language - ebrake . (They are handbrakes over here.) Sounds like the cable has snapped somewhere. Usually they break at a joint or end nipple or similar. I think the rear part of the centre console comes off and then the gaiter over the handbrake base. Check there are cables and nuts on both sides. You may be lucky and the cable has just come out. The other end is, obviously, in the back brake drum and I suspect the noise is because there is no tension on some part of the mechanism which is allowing it to move more than it should do. This involves taking the drum off which isn't something I'd recommend a complete novice try to do.

As for the noise, could be all sorts. I would have suggested something in the tyre but you say it disappears when you brake. That would lead me to go more with some loose component or a warped disc.

My drum occasionally makes a noise (only when braking) when its very cold in the morning, it dissapears after its warmed up, i assumed it would be rust/brakedust in the drum, just an idea before you condemn that drum. (Like a grinding noise under light braking for the first few times).

Isnt clicking down to cv joints? I cant remember (could be warped disc as suggested)

Hey guys thanks for the replies, after doing some looking around I found I was missing I think I solved the front ticking

Looks like I was missing the anti rattle springs in my calipers. Seems to have fixed it for now.

Still havent dove into the drum/handbrake issue but I will keep you posted thanks!
