After investigating updating my RNS 510 SatNav to the latest spec I have now finally done it.

Chose to have the job done by http://www.satnavsystems.com/ rather than risk a download off the web.

Their technician came to the house, installed firmware update 2660 (they do not recommend the very latest updates as they are still untested/unproven for reliability), then loaded VW Maps V6 together with safety camera locations.

He also installed the VW microphone and wiring, and enabled Voice Control with Vag.com.

All went very well, took about 3 hours to complete and comes complete with a 3 year warranty and does not invalidate my VW warranty. Total cost was £195 which I feel is a very good price considering the price of buying the mic, latest VW disc and risking a dodgy download.

So far all is working very well. Startup of the system is noticeably quicker, and all the other features of the firmware update are working well. The Climatronic controls which appear on the screen are also brighter and far larger than before.

Voice control allows control of radio, media, CD and satnav. Will take a bit to learn all the commands but so far very impressive.

I cannot recommend SatNav systems highly enough. They came to the house, have their own excellent technicians and vans but most of all most of their work is carried out at VW main dealers. That was enough of a recommend for me.

V6.1 are the latest maps but if your happy then thats the main thing I guess! Voice control is OK, but a bit of a gimmick - half the time its quicker to press the button for what you want rather than waiting for the unit to respond. Its a nice toy though.

(If the maps have safety/speed camera locations on them then they are downloaded/hacked from the 'net - genuine VW map DVD's dont have the camera data on)

    Isaac,

SatNav systems have incorporated their own safety camera database with the VW map so that they are now a "Point of Interest" appearing on the map - very impressive. As they admit - dont ask how they do it!!!!

It isn't their camera database, I know exactly how they do it. This hack of the VW maps has been around for a while now. Its downloadable from the internet for £0.00.

Dont rely on it too much though. It does not update so if a new camera is added/moved then you wont know about it.
