I have owned my 97 A4 for over 11 years and I frequently have to unblock the drain holes under the battery and the servo, to drain water that has collected.

Since this usually involves removing the battery, this can be a pain.

Reading through the postings I can see that this a common problem and was wondering if Audi, or anyone had come up with a solution?

Yeah, remove the rubber bungs and throw them in the nearest bin,

VAG have now started doing this too.

Are there any problems regarding the removal of the bungs?

I was thinking along the lines of fumes being dragged in and such.

I actually tried this a couple of years back, but whilst it did allow some water to drain it didn't get rid of the crap and they soon blocked again.

The bungs were never designed to be airtight (fume-tight)

When they are airtight....... they are water-tight and flooded!!!

This fume theory is nonsense, and frankly, doesn't hold water
    (no pun intended)

Looks like removal might lead to a fume problem

I suspect his fumes were entering the car from another source,
probably the boot. Where were they coming from, the exhaust?

If the fumes were coming from the front of the car, then something
needed fixed. To concentrate on drain-holes is bizarre.

Think about it, how could the reinstatement of an non-airtight
    bung stop anything?

    Regards
    Jim
