Snow chains on Audi A6 2.0TDI avant 2007

Hi,

I am going to the french alps in February and I am wondering if I can fit snow chains without damaging anything on the car.

I get different answers depending on who (even within Audi) I am talking to.

I am looking at normal chains, but I don't want to risk the car without spening £2501

Of course you can get snow chains to fit your car. The latest snow chains are designed for minimal clearance and are 9mm in depth or less. Go to one of the reputable snow chain manufacturers Weissenfels or Rud. Just Google Snow Chains and you will find a wealth of information.

Read up as much as you can and fit the chains dry before you go. It can be nasty beside a snowy road trying to read snow chain fitting instructions!

It will depend on what wheel tyre combination you have!

Have a look in your handbook under the Winter Driving information section should give tips on what combos can be fitted with chains. Its not so much that they will wreck your car (but possible) but it would trash your big alloys.

If your going skiing in europe invest in the best winter tyre combo you can afford (definetly not too wide and with a sensible sidewall profile) and hopefully your chains can stay in the box.

My tyres are 225/50/17, and they say on on handbook that it is fine but they mention 42 rim... what does that mean?

I think you have left a bit out? Should say something like ET 42 rim. Just means the offset of the axle mating face to the outer rim (its actually the distance in mm from the centerline of the wheel to the face, but thats Boring Spotter Stuff). If your wheels are Original Audi then you should be OK.

Spike spiders are pretty good. They are designed specifically for cars with sporty suspension set ups. You attach plates to your front wheels before you leave the uk, then the chains attach to the hub and wheel in literally seconds.
