I'm biting the bullet and getting cam belt done, even thought I think it has been done.

Called a garage round the corner from me, who know what they are doing.

Also needs a Service end of this month too, They said Full Service, Said something about both belts, tensioner, water pump.

    £623.

I'm not sure if this is reasonable or not. Any advise guys ?

I can tell you that's not too bad. I had my cambelt done on 80000 miles on A6 2.7t Biturbo, there is a kit which consists of the belt, rollers, tensioner, and it is advisable to get both the water pump and thermostat changed at the same time because of the work involved in stripping it down.
My wife had a cambelt change only on her Golf TDi and that was £340.
You're getting a full service on top, if it's a major as I suspect it will be if you're contemplating a cambelt change then that doesn't sound too excessive!

Sounds about right for a private garage depending on what you're getting in a "full" service. I'm sure cam belts are only used on cars "these days" as a money making exercise

Its not a job many people would consider doing themselves but it is quite easy to do
You may think I'm being helpful yet sarcastic, this is only because I feel I need to help you to help yourself in the future

Yeah when I broke the costs down, VW wanted £420 for cam belt, and that was without the water pump either. I've decided to go just for the cam belt at the moment, as I'm sitting on 77K, if it hasn't been done, i'm 17k over due.

The service can wait another month or so.

I'd get your water pump done at the same time, its right behind your cam belt

They wanted £203 for the pump and labour? Blimey, considering most of the gubbins is out of the way it seems steep?

The rest is almost 100% labour, Honda charge £72inc vat per hour. Makes me glad i know a man.

I had the major 50k mile service done on my Passat with a cambelt and all associated parts, and an MOT for about £500 at a VW Main Dealer, so I also got a 2 year warranty on all the work. The Passat is a much bigger job than the Golf, so I'd be pretty certain that you are being ripped off.

No, No, the £623 was not from a dealer, was from a local garage.

Ive booked in at the local garage for the cambelt and waterpump which they will do for £350.
