    Hi

In my earlier cars, if it was cold and frosty - i used to leave the engine running whilst i was 'de-frosting' the car. I may even nip back inside the house for 5 mins or so to heat up the car. (I have electronic gates - so no one can get in/out my open roof garage)

is this possible with the B6? I heard/read somewhere that the door can autolock after so many minutes.

I don't want to be in situation with the engine running and doors locked!!

    Please advice

    Cheers

i think you are actually safe doing this.

The car will re lock if you open the doors but dont put key in ignition (after about 5 mins)

It will also lock when you get above 10 or 15 MPH

Sat on the drive with engine running is fine as far as i am aware. I sit in mine with engine running for prolonged periods and the door doesn't lock.

HOWEVER - Dont blame me if you have the only passat that has a mind of its own and it locks you out when its minus 10 outside and you have popped out to start the car in your PJ's and slippers. Then you realize your front door key is on the car keys and the car is locked!!

My favourite so far is - open the boot with the button and then leave the keys in the boot and close it.................DOH! trip home for spare (3 times so far - i never learn)

You will be ok the car only locks when unlocked and the doors have not been opened after x mins. So what I do is unlock the car pull the door open and then shut it (job done auto lock disabled)

Please keep a spare key handy as my Passat locked me out.

It is possible as reported on Audis:--

    http://local.honestjohn.co.uk/Audi_A...London_EN.html

"Comfort Locking can lock you out. If you get out of the car with the engine running and close the door it will automatically lock. "

    Dork

Me, personally, I've left the engine running for ages - once forgetting I'd left the car running for over an hour - and never been locked out yet.

In the bad snow last year I borrowed my Dad's Jeep Patriot which has the VAG 2.0PD engine and VAG electronics. All the instrumentation and controls are Vag family.

I started it up, shut the door and was talking to a workmate, after about five minutes the central locking went clunk and locked me out with the engine running.
I had to ring my Dad to bring the spare keys. He battled through the snow in my Mums Fiesta and managed to get to me after an hour or so. He said he'd had a terrible journey, I told him he should get a 4X4

Did a little bit of research and found this isn't an isolated issue across VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda.

For me I'll only risk this at home when the spare key is available.

It's about time heated Windscreens became standard as well. Ford even fit them on basic Fiesta's but they seem to be very rare and an expensive option on VAG products. They are absolutely brilliant.

One think I'm very pleased with is how quick the heater warms up in my CR Passat. Whithin a minute or so warm air is flooding in the cabin. My wifes 1.9PD engined Skoda takes ages before you get any warm air.

    Cheers

I'm pretty sure the heated screen and washer jets were only a £100 option when I got them on the highline. Best £100 I've ever spent - worth 3 or 4 times that but lets not give VW ideas!

I was under the impression - and this could be wrong - that Ford hold or held the patent for the heated front screen. I don't know if that has anything to do with the cost/rarity with other marques.
