Are the PCV (???Crankcase Ventilation) and EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valves the same or different things? What are the systems of a failing PCV valve - can it include hiher oil consumption and the emissions light coming on occasionally? Thanks

Positive Crankcase Ventilation and Exhaust Gas Recirculation are two different emissions systems. Which engine are we dealing with?

The PCV system on the AWY has not given me any trouble yet but the EGR valves are a nuisance. I suggest you start with a fault code read.

Sorry to spoil the party, but....
I have the VW Factory Service Manual printed off from vwerwin.

    It clearly says the following....
    "
    Exhaust gas recirculation system

The exhaust gas recirculation system was only fitted on engines with
    engine codes AZQ, BME.
From 11/2005 the exhaust gas recirculation system will be discontinued
on engines with engine code BME.
    Note

The function and control of the exhaust gas recirculation system is
checked by the engine control unit -J623- self-diagnosis.
The exhaust gas recirculation valve -N18- with tapered valve tappet
allows various cross sectional openings at different valve strokes.

Pulsed control enables every conceivable valve position.
    "

I suggest you do not have an EGR valve.
The excessive oil consumption was a feature of the AWY engine.
That's why they used to sell the Polo with a bottle of oil in the boot!

You are correct; the AWY does not have EGR. I was thinking AZQ as it was a 3 cylinder.
