    Hello everyone, I have recently bought a golf MK3 1.4 for £175

It has done 177,000 Miles and the engine sounds a little rough, Low idle with a sort of misfire where it sounds as though on of the cylinders isn't firing correctly. I have ordered some new spark plugs and also a new fuel filter but and already changed the oil and filter. I was just wondering what else can be done to make this car more reliable run smoother and last longer.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks,

    Jack T

Do a compression test and hope you don't have the same problem I have - I'm part way through taking the engine out in order to get it re-bored.

Plus get a diagnostic read done, there may be a sensor somewhere which is misbehaving.

Hey there, Thanks for the reply. I have a compression tester so I will have a look at doing one of these this weekend. What sort of compression should a 1.4 be getting in these golf's?

    Thanks for the input, Jack

KK thanks for the help. I don't have a Haynes manual but I am sure it will be worth getting one if I decide to keep the car for a while.

    Thanks, Jack
