I bought a 2001 2.5tdi allroad about 8 months ago and now realise that the air suspension compressor is on most of the time and its pretty noisy I thought it was a rear wheel bearing as the noise stops when I slow down but when I increase the cars height when stationary the compressor is whats making the noise.

I don't have any problems with the car 'settling down' overnight and it drives very well, just that the compressor is noisy and on most of the time. I've read through many threads and believe that the first thing I need to do is have the car connected to a diagnostic machine to see if there are any fault codes. Whats the best way of doing this? I can see cheap and maybe not so cheerful OBD2 readers on ebay for just a few quid but they don't look like they will show all the potential codes/blocks etc. that I may need to see (or explain what they mean).

Is it worth forking out a lot more money for a 'proper' OBD2 kit (which I can re-use), is it worth getting an ebay 'cheapy' or does anyone know somewhere in south herts/north London where I can get the codes read as a start for a diagnosis?

Three things will happen if your compressor is on it's last legs....it will take forever to pump-up, it will run most of the time and it will be noisy..

    Sounds like it's wallet-opening time....

    Kid-Jensen,

I'm pretty resigned to a pump replacement but what I don't want to do is replace the pump to find that it was worn out due to some other fault in the suspension system...so I'm still left with the OBD2/VAG-COM question i.e. an ebay 'cheapy', a hundred or more for a 'better' one or somewhere that will read the codes for not too much money

If you get a cheap one make sure it is a VAG specific one, otherwise it is unlikely to give you codes relating to the suspension. Most of the cheap ones will only ready the Engine and Gearbox controllers.

I bought a cheap lead for VAG-Com of Ebay then paid the £50 for a full licence from Ross Tech, works great. In total about £60 and you will able to do much more with VAG-Com.

Most garages will charge around £30 for a scan so it will pay for itself quickly.

just for information to all that need to know.
I have just had the suspension checked out on my 55 allroad, cause the pump was taking forever to raise up and after a while the dash warning light would come on. So, took it along to the independent audi garage for testing.
The contol box and two valve blocks showing faults, replaced at a cost of £750.

So the car now sits at number two on the suspension height switch and will raise to number three, when stationary.
When moving though, the warning lightcomes on again. So back into the garage for further inspection.
The inspection is done and they tell me the switch inside the pump which overheats and the warning light comes on and so the suspension will not raise.
A new pump is fitted and a service is done : cost £1300. but it now works.
The car is a 55 and has done 120 000 miles.

So if anyone is thinking they may have a costly problem coming up, heres the
    reality.
Any else had the same situation?????

    Cheers

I am guessing without knowing the full extent of your problems, but i would question why they changed the valve block and control box? the fault may have been the compressor overheating all along, even then why is it overheating, was it the compressor leaking or is there a leak somewhere else in the system still to find? I would suggest full problem solving before replacing any parts on an allroad as these pars have a huge cost to replace.

can you elaborate on the history of your allroad problems and the parts they have actually replaced, Any sinking at any corners?

I bought a pump from ebay 18 months ago for £90. Fitted it in an afternoon. £1210 saving by my reckoning.
Just to upset u a little more the airbags on the front last around 100k - 120k before they need replacing.
