    Hi,
Currently I have Polo but planning to buy Skoda Octavia, just seen one, it's '2002 SKODA OCTAVIA 1.9 TDi Elegance 5dr Diesel Estate' done 160k and priced at £1500.
Checked the mielage from all MOT certificates and looks OK.
Considering high mielage anything particular I would look for.
Basically need need car for family and daily commuting to work which is round trip 100 miles .
OR should I look for lower mielage car.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks

For the money that is pretty much on the button but with any car mileage does kill it. The engine is pretty rock solid but look for a good service history, not just the stamps in the book but ask for receipts. If there is little / no service history then walk away.

Check the cambelt and check the clutch for signs of wear.

the 1900 lump is pretty bullet proof, but expect things around it to go wrong (after all it has done 160,000).

All in all, its always best to opt for a lower mileage but if your budget dictates then you could do a lot worse.

    Best of Luck

At 160K miles even if the engine is fine , a lot of the ancillaries start to go .Things like suspension bushes , alternators , clutches etc . You might be lucky and find a high mileage car that has been serviced on the dot and sympathetically driven but these cars are like hens' teeth. If you are doing 100 miles per day you want something with a lot less mileage. I used to do 120 miles per day and it mounts up quite quickly. Even if the car's fine you will soon find that brakes , tyres etc soon wear out doing this kind of mileage.

Dual Mass Flywheel (clatter when turning engine off, uneven vibration at idle), front wishbone rear bushes (wooly steering) rear beam bushes (kcik under the bum and rear steering) turbo VNT failure (diagnostic scan/obvious driving issue with power delivery) flap motor V71 (recirculatory/fresh air function does not change over properly on heater) air con (no cold air, clutch falls off the Sanden SD7V16 pump) I could go on.

Get a full inspection wit a diagnostic scan, if it's not too bad have it well serviced, fix the bits it needs and enjoy.

    Greg.
