I was just wondering if anyone could help me the other day i was driving along the road and noticed my engine temp was going over 90oC in all my previous cars i have never known the needle to go over 90oC mark. I thought the fan would kick in to cool it back down to 90oC but i did not hear the fan kick in at all can anyone tell me if this is normal and is it normal for my oil temp to rise above 100oC-110oC degrees and could you also tell me where the fuse diagram is for a passat b6 59plate as i want to check the fuse for the fan thanks

My fan never seems to kick in, the aircon one does, but I'm unsure if the other one is electric anyway, it could be powered by the air coming through the rad, temp guage hasn't ever gone over the 12 o'clock mark though.

The coolant temp shouldn't go much over 90C because it reads 90C when the temp is between 80 - 100 C roughly. So the fan should kick in if the guage tries to rise. It is possible the fan fuse has blown. A VCDS read should show what is happening.

As far as oil temp goes I don't think I've ever seen mine go over 105 degrees, usually running between 95 to 102 degrees area, regardless of outside weather.

VCDS will show temperatures and fan status. Fuse should be F23 (SB23) in the black box in the engine bay. If not F23, try F8. The fuse often blows when the manifold flap motor/linkage goes wrong.

That's my experience, too. Did see 120 degrees driving up big mountain passes in the French Pyrenees last month with ambient temps.around 70 and the engine working moderately hard. Probably due to the relatively low road speeds and consequent low/slow airflow over the oil cooler.

120 deg C oil temp is no problem with a good quality oil. Wouldn't want to see it go much over 130 deg C for any significant length of time though.
