Hi, I have a 2006 2.0TFSi 6 speed manual Passat, 45,000 miles, that has a pulsating scraping noise from the gearbox in 1st gear at low speeds around 10mph.

It is only noticeable in 1st gear and pulsates with vehicle speed, i.e. faster speed, faster pulsating, but not really detectable above 15mph or below 5mph.

I have rolled the car downhill at 10mph with the engine off, clutch down and moved the gear lever in and out of each gear including neutral and found the noise only occurs in 1st gear. Not noticed the noise in any other gear at any other speed.

VW garage agree it is coming from the gearbox but don't know what's causing it without stripping and inspecting. Has anyone had anything similar with a 6 speed manual?

The only thing comes to my mind is the flywheel. I had to replace my flywheel with the similar noise coming from the gearbox. This is the downside of owning a VAG, and afraid to say it will cost you an arm and a leg, to get it replaced. This will cost you around £500 +.

    HTH!

I'm sure others may provide you with accurate info.

The noise sounds more like a brake fault. Are you certain it is from the gearbox. If it is from the gear box, when does it occur, on drive as you gently accelerate or as you lift the throttle. OR does it only occur when you lift the clutch. All this helps point to a fault. It shouldn't be the clutch/flywheel as these rarely affect only one gear and if they do it is usually reverse more than any other.

Hi, noise occurs with engine on, clutch engaged, driving in 1st gear at around 10mph and also when engine is off, clutch disengaged (flywheel also not rotating) rolling downhill at 10mph when 1st gear is selected. No noise noticed in any other gear or speed. I think it points to a gearbox problem in 1st gear but don't know what would have failed or worn in the gearbox to make the noise. Although I don't think the flywheel (DMF) is making the noise, I wouldn't rule it out as being the cause of damage to the gearbox. If you have other thoughts on what might have gone in the gearbox, or a similar experience, let me know; thanks.

It's your pads mate, you are hearing the sound created by the lip on the disc to the worn front pad, if these are original, I suggest you get some new ones in to kill off the graunch.

Brake pads! OK, so the noise is only at around 10mph, but only occurs in 1st gear, no noise when I select a different gear, so I doubt it's brake related.
