Your passat was set to distance schedule last time it was serviced which means 15,000km or 9,500 miles roughly. That's why it say's service soon. You can have it serviced anywhere as long as they follow VW specs. BUT..VW do keep a data base of "in house" servicing. If you stop using them your future service history obviously won't be on their data base. This don't matter BUT VW will not offer "goodwill" help for "out of warranty" cars that have been serviced elesewhere. So it's up to you.

The indicator is a guesswork thing mate, I've had them come on early myself, it's a computer generated thing where it adds up stop starts, cold hot engine, speed conditions, rpm etc, and mixes them up into a best guess answer, as long as you don't run over the 10k mark for fixed, or 18k mark for variable, there should be no issue's with service history, although if the variable one comes on early and you are over the 12k mark, I'd get it serviced, hth.

Shop around for dealer prices they do vary my local vw dealer is way more expensive than one 20 miles away. Also VW have been offering 3 year service packages that work out around £300 inc an mot. which aint bad my wife bought one for her beetle.

using a local vw specialist is always an option just make surre the right oil is used. Mine is on "long" life servicing and i get around 18,000miles between service varied driving comute to work 18 miles the hols in france where we can do 1400 miles in a week.
